what could they have done to stop strikes and to save money?
I do not understand your question. Northwest came from bankruptcy on 31 May 2007. The announced merger with Delta, 14 April 2008. Apparently they were operating profitably at the time of the merger announcement. The merger provides a good business because there is relatively little overlap in routes served by both airlines and they have a tradition of cooperation.
